Brain cancer remains stuck in the 20th century. It needs a cancer-style revolution in diagnosis, treatment and clinical trials, backed by investment that can turn research breakthroughs into better outcomes. Time is critical: if not now, maybe never.

I am a member of Brain Cancer Justice (BCJ), a patient- and family-led campaign group speaking for people affected by brain cancer, whose voices have gone unheard for decades.

On 15 June 2026, 35 MPs spoke in the Westminster Hall debate on our petition, bringing the voices of more than 109,000 people. This was an important milestone. Now that momentum must lead to meaningful change.

Patients and families have long called for a National Brain Cancer Lead. In March 2023, ministers recognised the need for stronger national leadership, yet more than three years later, no lead has been appointed. I welcome the Government’s recent cancer leadership reforms, but patients and families do not consider them a substitute for a dedicated National Brain Cancer Lead.

The Department of Health and Social Care’s 2018 Task and Finish Working Group on brain tumour research examined barriers and opportunities to improve outcomes. Yet patients still face poor survival rates and obstacles to treatment and clinical trials. For those living with brain cancer, words alone do not extend lives.

After more than a decade of evidence and commitments, patients and families still have to ask: who is accountable for delivering better outcomes? Responsibility is spread across organisations and programmes, but no one is clearly accountable for driving progress.

Recent calls for a “cancer-style revolution” in dementia care, including a dedicated Dementia Tsar, have put leadership and accountability in the spotlight. Brain cancer kills more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer, yet it still has no dedicated national lead. Why has it not received the same focus?

A full-time National Brain Cancer Lead would provide clear accountability across diagnosis, research, clinical trials, treatment and patient care. For families facing a brain tumour diagnosis, time is precious. We cannot afford another decade of slow progress.

I urge you to appoint a full-time National Brain Cancer Lead and turn years of commitments into meaningful improvements for patients and families.

It is time to TURN TERMINAL INTO TREATABLE.
